Honeydew Smoothie With A Kick I Adorned With Love

I’ve never had the discipline for juice cleanses. No solid food for days? No thanks. I am, however, a big believer in incorporating juices and smoothies into my diet. When I’m not buying them at juiceries around LA, I’m making them at home with my Nutri Bullet. I generally keep the ingredients simple, combining standard greens like spinach and kale with some of my favorite fruits, but when Williams-Sonoma invited me to partake in their “Not Your Typical Smoothie” challenge, I jumped at the chance to get a little more creative. The goal was to create a smoothie that was uniquely different from something you might normally find, so I set out in search of a couple of ingredients that felt a bit unusual. My picks? Beans and avocado. Apart from the obvious health benefits of each (including fiber, protein and iron, to name a few), they provide a rich and creamy consistency that goes down easily, but is substantial enough to leave you satisfied. I had my reservations about gambling with such an unusual combo, but the result was surprisingly delicious. And if I hadn’t made it myself, I wouldn’t have known they were even part of the mix. Here’s the recipe I came up with:

Ingredients

1/2 cup chilled cannellini beans
2/3 cup nonfat Greek yogurt
2/3 cup vanilla almond milk
1/2 juice of a lemon
1 1/2 cups sliced honeydew
2/3 cup spinach
1 avocado
1 frozen banana

Instructions

Place all ingredients into a blender (I used my Nutri Bullet, but Williams-Sonoma offers a great selection of blenders here). Blend until smooth and serve immediately.

    I’m with you on juice cleanses. I like incorporating them into my diet, but I can’t even imagine how hangry I would be after being on a liquid diet for more than 6 hours let alone DAYS – ha.

    And, great idea with the beans! I’m definitely going to add them into my next smoothie for an extra kick of protein and iron.

      Oh, I would be SO hangry on a juice cleanse (love that word by the way)! 😉 And I’m so glad to hear you’re willing to try the beans because they were a great addition and such an easy way to squeeze protein into the mix. I’m not a huge meat eater, so I was pretty excited to discover how well they fit in.

      I hadn’t either until attempting it for this challenge, but I was so impressed with the way everything turned out. They’re definitely going to be my new go-to for a great source of protein. I highly recommend giving it a try!
