I’ve written numerous blog posts on personal style, but it recently occurred to me that I’d neglected to touch upon one of the most important elements when it comes to building a great outfit: what’s underneath. But more specifically, the bra that’s underneath.
While the right bra has the ability to make an outfit, the wrong bra can do just the opposite. Whether the shape is off, it lacks support, or you’re forced to tug on it just to keep it from slipping down (hello, strapless bras), it can kill your outfit and your confidence. Needless to say, there are a lot of factors that come into play when searching for a bra that checks all the boxes. It’s taken me years to acquire an arsenal of bras that I’m happy with, but I’ve finally narrowed it down to five that I can’t live without. Each one serves a unique purpose, and I’m excited to share them below in collaboration with Wacoal, one of my most trusted lingerie brands over the years.
The Everyday Bra
This is arguably the most important bra you’ll wear, so it’s essential to find one you really love. It should be comfortable, smooth, and inconspicuous so that you can wear it with your favorite white tee or semi-sheer blouse. It took lots of trial and error before I landed on my go-to bra, but I love Wacoal’s How Perfect Wire Free, because it doesn’t have any underwire but still manages to provide a ton of support and practically disappears under clothing.
The bralette is what I call the no bra, bra. Unlike most girls, I actually don’t like the feeling of not wearing a bra, so the bralette (usually unlined, unpadded, and wire-free), is a happy medium between the two. And I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found Wacoal’s Halo Lace. Most of the bralettes I tried in the past weren’t supportive, but this one is. The plunge front is extremely flattering for lower necklines, and the straps convert to racerback for added versatility.
The Strapless Bra
I think we can all agree that finding a reliable strapless bra has to be the most challenging search of them all. Expecting a bra to defy the law of gravity is a big ask, yet somehow Wacoal’s Red Carpet Strapless Bra does just that. I’ve sworn by it for years, so learning it is a top seller coveted to celebrities, stylists and countless women came as no surprise to me. And like most of Wacoal’s bras, it’s available in a wide range of sizes, so it works for just about every body type.
The sexy bra
Since most of our underwear drawer is filled with dull, practical bras, it’s nice to reserve a spot for one that makes you feel special. Wacoal’s Lace Affair Underwire is perfect because it strikes an ideal balance between sexy and supportive (two words you rarely hear together when it comes to bras). It’s flirty, feminine, romantic and comfortable – everything you hope a sexy bra would be.
The Sports Bra
I’m embarrassed to admit that I spent years doubling up on cheap, flimsy sports bras in an attempt to gain the additional support I always felt was lacking. Wacoal’s Bestselling Sport Underwire is a game changer! It’s more of an investment than the bras I’ve previously owned, but it’s so worth it to have a bra that can keep up with my high (or low) intensity workouts, and it doesn’t give me that dreaded “uni-boob” that sports bras are often guilty of causing. Plus, I love that the band AND the straps are adjustable.
(P.S. – If you aren’t sure you’re wearing the correct bra size, Wacoal offers an extremely helpful fit guide with detailed instructions on how to find your perfect size, as well as complimentary fittings in-store.).
